`The Meaning of Life: A Self Portrait.  This installation is the latest iteration of exploring my outsider identity as queer older woman.  In this work I turned to the question where, if not a member of a religious group with prescribed doctrine to guide one through life then where do I find a deep meaning in my life. What I mean by meaning is the way one may embody a set of principles that feels true to and shapes one's life.  Existential philosophy provides a roadmap on how to navigate through life while creating one's own meaning.  Existentialism accurately captures the zeitgeist.  A major tenet is that life is meaningless and we suffer from alienation; in order to counteract this they propose the best way to live is to take responsibility for one’s life by questioning the norms and deciding for oneself what is meaningful.  This work emanates from this philosophy as I examined my life from young adult to present.

Each of us is a mix of many things. Identity is gloriously layered, multifaceted and built upon a confoundingly complex spectrum of factors, some that we are born with, some that are impacted by external variables and some that evolve and change with us over time. The portrayal of who we are can focus on a single, significant aspect of our identity or can reflect an entire network of associations shaped by broader spheres of influence: our connections to familial, social, ethnic, cultural or other groups; our personal or family history; our geographical, economic or social circumstances; our political or spiritual belief systems; our jobs, our lifestyles or our personal interests; and so much more.
How do you represent your identity? When you look inward and ask, “Who am I?” or look outward to your community and ask, “Who are we?” what do you see, and how do you portray it? For this exhibition Cabrillo Gallery welcomes all interpretations of the theme of identity. We invite you to share with us your representation of who you are within the vast continuum of what it is to be human.
Juror: Pauli Ochi grew up in her family’s gallery in Sun Valley, Idaho. After studying art history and art business she worked in New York before founding Ochi Projects in the Arlington Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, California in 2015. OCHI is a contemporary art gallery that supports and contextualizes a diverse roster of artists with experimental and emerging practices as they investigate the conceptual and material boundaries of art.

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
How does the art we create reflect our own personal growth? As artists and individuals, we are in a constant state of transformation. Our lives continue to shift and evolve with every season, and the work we make tends to mirror these changes. For many of us, our art is a reflection of the lives we live, and often serves as a deeper extension of ourselves. Through art, we are able to visually communicate our transformative states of being. For this exhibit, we sought work that reflects personal growth and evolution across a wide range of visual mediums.
NOTE FROM THE CURATOR

Metamorphosis: The Art of Transformation, as the title of this exhibition suggests, invites us to think and ponder on the many ways we have changed and evolved both recently and over long periods of time. As a guest curator, it was my pleasure and honor to review hundreds of artists works from around the globe. After many days of careful consideration, I made my final selections. What you will find in this online exhibition is a thoughtful representation of ideas, temperaments, styles, techniques, sensitivities and world views as expressed by a handful of talented artists. These works spoke to me in more than one way, making a lasting impression about my very own experience with change and transformation in this world. It is my intention that you also experience each work for what it has to offer us. — Sergio Gómez, Artist, Curator & Entrepreneur

Juried by: Anuradha Vikram
SoLA Contemporary is pleased to announce the opening of its biennial juried show, FRESH 2021, independently curated by Los Angeles-based writer, curator, and educator, Anuradha Vikram. In keeping with tradition, FRESH encourages artists to consider how they can make an impact in their communities, by reflecting on current ideas and trends in contemporary art. In the wake of a year defined by a global pandemic and social justice reckoning, the mission of FRESH is more poignant and pressing than ever before. FRESH 2021, is a retrospective collection of art that engages with the challenges, tragedies, and triumphs that humanity has experienced in this past year.
Vikram has selected 33 artists who use various mediums, including photography, video, paint, sculpture, and mixed media to process and reflect on this complex moment in time. Rather than dwell heavily on the past, however, these artworks analyze, interpret, and transform the trauma. The result is an exhibition that uplifts the viewer, even as it probes at profound and personal subject matter.
“Art is at its best when it reflects the shared experiences and concerns that shape our understanding of the historical moment we are living in,” says Vikram. “More than a year of setbacks, personal loss, solitude, and mental and physical health struggles have left us feeling exhausted, frustrated, and sad. The artists in FRESH turn these challenges into visions, and in doing so they help us to make sense of the strange year we’ve had. There are moments of connection and even of joy, as we find one another and our own strengths and voices.”

Jurors Sunook Park of CSULB and Terrell Tilford of Band of Vices viewed over 400 images from over 100 artists in a blind jurying process. They chose 46 pieces by 39 artists for an interconnected, authentic, and compelling echo of contemporary life. Reflection brings together artists from across Southern California whose practices contemplate and mirror these unprecedented times.

PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE
JULY 1 - AUGUST 15, 2021

IncuArts Gallery
WWW.INCUARTS.COM

Past, Present, Future is an exhibition exploring how time, experience, and history impact us.
Often deeply personal, these artists dissect and represent historical and cultural tropes in the hope of revealing something closer to a truth. As the intersections of race, sexual orientation, ethnic beliefs, gender, stigmas, and wealth are investigated, we begin to hear a chorus of rising voices. These are the voices of those who have endured and bared witness to the lasting impact of colonialism, sexism, racism, and other systematic means of oppression.
These artists, with their differing points of views, offer up to us a new understanding of our past and history, creating a more complete collective expression. We see how it has shaped our present, and in some instances, even a way to move forward in hopes of a more just future.
The work unveils emotional realities derived from direct and historically repeating experiences, offering us glimpses of grief and hope. By sharing their lived experiences, they have pulled back the colonialist-white-patriarchal veil of history, exposing the raw and often painful truth that lies just beyond the curtain.

Older Generation Lesbian Artist and Poets WMN Issue 2 ‘Show Me What You Got’ is a global representation of older generations lesbians who make visual art and/or poetry. WMN believes in representing sectors of the lesbian community that are not given as many platforms to publish their artwork. We feel that those who paved the way for our community deserve a platform and a space to showcase their work which can represent creations from the past, or the present. We are so grateful and indebted to our elders across the world, who paved the way for our rights and freedom as they stand today and want to give back to this incredible community by creating a supportive space to present their work, lives and experience.

An A-Historical Daydream investigates the slipperiness of linear time across a variety of both parallel and intersecting histories. Histories are often singular narratives: they are agendized and unbalanced, and promote a binary idea of ‘us vs them’ or ‘conqueror and conquered.’ This exhibition invites artists to consider the idea of time, history, and future in new and radical ways. It asks them to reflect upon the popular histories that we have been taught, and to then radically imagine an imaginary space/time dimension in which colonialism and hegemonic structures either never existed or existed in a different form. Some artists in the exhibition explore the possibilities of reimagined histories and presents based on a radical imagining of ‘what could have been.’ Others look staunchly towards a future that is largely untainted by our scorched cyclical pass.
An A-Historical Daydream takes place both at A.I.R. Gallery’s exhibition space at 155 Plymouth Street and online in the form of a video program.

The gallery is open by appointment only. A link to make an appointment will be posted soon.

Covid, cops, cabin fever, eco-catastrophe, and sexual politics --- in the art of our moment. Beyond the headlines, there is heroism and humor. In Crisis Mode, artists create individual expressions of shared experiences, fears and fantasies. Behind public events, private sorrows. Crisis Mode memorializes the present tense --- and points to tomorrow. It's personal now. It's time to write the history of the future.

POST PRIDE
Ace/121 Gallery
June 19 - July 31, 2020
Virtual Exhibit: Click Here
POST PRIDE at Ace/121 Gallery

2020 has seen the reimagining of Gay Pride events all over the world since the first parade in 1970, one year following the Stonewall uprising. As the public health protocols surrounding COVID-19 seem to evolve daily, many Pride events that were initially canceled and have been reconfigured into a virtual format, creating a near-global celebration that crosses borders, cultures and languages that our bodies cannot. Larry Kramer, a famously vocal and key player in ACT UP and beyond during the ongoing AIDS epidemic, died the night the protests against police brutality following the killing of George Floyd began. The intersections of gay liberation and racial injustice all over the world were brought into stark focus, and many queer-led movements rightly shifted their focus to joining the ongoing protests led by Black Lives Matter.

Post Pride marks the first exhibition for many of the artists featured here since quarantine. The show was conceived before COVID-19 hit, and quarantine seemed to make its themes all the more relevant. As we neared the deadline for submissions, George Floyd was killed and another series of submissions came in. The nine artists featured in the show reflect myriad meditations on queerness and Pride with a particular focus for some on social and racial issues, highlighting the intersectional themes that Pride has come to represent.
