ORIGIN OF THE ODD
2020
My series Origin of the Odd developed from an exploration into the ability to biologically transition to another gender and pondering the effects that biogenetics will have in the future. My research included the Pre-Cambrian era when single cell organisms evolved into multi cellular organisms. These early organisms with their common names, joint foot, hair stomach (translated from the Latin nomenclature) point to our origins of difference and oddness.
Connecting queers, which were perceived as grotesque not too long ago with the actual grotesque images were a natural pairing and illuminated the commonality of our genetic oddities. I am looking at the most elemental building blocks of the human species, and visually reconstructing them with biological and synthetic materials to evoke a visceral and tactile response to our primordial nature.
